Castlegate was the main thoroughfare to and from Park Square to Wicker but it has been downgraded following the opening of the Sheffield Northern Relief Road. Castlegate, built along a portion of the River Don, was the old location of the slaughter houses, it currently houses the indoor markets, built in the 1960s to provide permanent accommodation to tradesmen and are now projected to be moved to The Moor where new bespoke buildings will be built. On the other side, a £13 million state-of-the-art office scheme has regenerated the central Riverside area.
