Castle Square is the plaza at the intersection of High Street, Angel Street and Arundel Gate. The name was given to the square in the 1960s to reflect the proximity of the square to the site of Sheffield Castle. From 1967 to 1994 it was the site of a roundabout terminating the dual carriageway which once run along Arundel Gate. Underneath the roundabout was a network of pedestrian underpasses and shops, with the central area open to the sky. This area became affectionately known locally as "Hole in t' Road". In the 1990s it became very dilpidated, so in 1994 it was filled in to make way for the Castle Square SuperTram stop.
